Episode Preview: The Blacklist 4×18 “Philomena”

The Blacklist returned last week with two really strong episodes that not only gave us an answer on Dembe’s role in poisoning Reddington, but also an entire episode dedicated to Mr. Kaplan. She’s always been one of my favorite characters, so getting to the root of who she is and where she came from was a nice surprise. However, she is currently out to destroy Red, and history has shown us that his adversaries don’t always fair well.

I would really hate to lose Mr. Kaplan, but between what’s she’s put in motion, and what is to come in the next episode, I just don’t see how there is any sort of happy ending in their future. Check out the episode synopsis, promo and picture gallery for some intel on Thursday’s new episode, “Philomena”.

Lots going on in this episode, and the pictures below tell an even more in-depth story. Dembe in the hospital, Ressler and Navabi are on a case… another Blacklister or are they trying to locate Mr. Kaplan?

Speaking of Mr. Kaplan… In a recent interview with EW, Bokenkamp gives a little background on the progression of Kate’s character over the course of the show. It’s interesting to know that she really wasn’t a part of the master plan from the beginning. Do you think giving her a larger role was a good idea?

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did you know from the beginning that Kaplan would have such deep ties to Masha and Katarina?

JON BOKENKAMP: No, not really. It’s something that we found as we went along. Kaplan wasn’t a character that was in the original pilot or the pitch, but as we started exploring Red’s world, she became really interesting and compelling to us, largely because of the actress, also just because of the role. She was unexpected, and it was really fun to write for her. As we got to know her better, it felt very organic. Midway through season 2 and it seemed very obvious in season 3, it became more clear who she was and how deep her ties went. It wasn’t something that was laid out in the very beginning, but something that felt very natural as we explored the landscape and the background of the show.
