3 Reasons Why The Blacklist Had to Kill Off [SPOILER]

The Blacklist 3x18 Mr. Solomon, Conclusion.

3 Reasons Why The Blacklist Had to Kill Off [SPOILER]

Last night’s episode of The Blacklist was hands down one of the most intense of the show’s third season. If you haven’t watched, be forewarned there are MAJOR spoilers ahead, so proceed at your own risk from here.

Liz and Tom’s wedding was over before it really got started. Mr. Solomon and his men surrounded the church, and at the end of last week’s episode, Tom and Liz fled in that really cool car that used to belong to Aram’s grandfather.

I say used to, because now it has been smashed into the back of a box truck. It was this little mishap that caused Liz to go into early labor and have an emergency c-section in the back of an abandoned nightclub.

However, as only Reddington could provide, she was surrounded with only the best medical staff and equipment, as well as a team of armed men ready to prevent Solomon and his mysterious benefactor from kidnapping Liz and her soon to be born child.

Little Agnes Keen was born, and we got to see the Keens happy and doting over their baby for a hot second before all hell broke loose.

In the week leading up to this episode, The Blacklist teased us that one of these two wouldn’t make it out alive: Liz or her baby. Not for one second did I think that it would be Elizabeth Keen to take her last breath. But it was, and the Blacklisters in the twittersphere were rocked.

In a heart-pounding (and heart breaking) scene, the decoy ambulance carrying Liz, Raymond and Nick (her doctor ex-boyfriend who is now on Red’s payroll) gets surrounded by Solomon’s men, Raymond is frantically trying to keep Liz alive. As the task force and FBI arrive and take out Solomon’s group, they make it to the van and open the back doors to Raymond grieving over Liz’s body.

As the new spreads out across the task force, Samar, Ressler, Aram and Cooper all have their moments of breaking down. Whether it was subtle like Ressler, or shaky like Samar’s, nothing could touch the way Raymond Reddington said goodbye to his Elizabeth. James Spader is something else, whether you agree with the show’s choice, it was superb acting.

Elizabeth Keen wasn’t killed off The Blacklist for no reason. In fact, I really don’t think she will stay dead very long. While most may feel this is a cheesy soap-tactic having a character rise from the dead, let me explain why The Blacklist needed her dead. At least for now:

1. Megan Boone’s Pregnancy Leave & Elizabeth Keen’s Mysterious Disappearance

317-16

Will Liz (Megan Boone) actually get to raise her little girl?

Sure, most actresses can easily get written off their show for a pregnancy hiatus. It is a very common practice. However, when you have a show like this and the female lead needs maternity leave, you have a very unique opportunity to include it in the show to further the plot. Killing off Liz gives Megan time to have her own baby, and the show a chance to use her absence to help their mystery. Red promised to tell her everything when things were “OK”. With her dead, things won’t be OK, so Reddington doesn’t have to spill his secrets, yet.

2. Someone wants Liz, and they hired Mr. Solomon to get her

318-08

Mr. Solomon (Edi Gathegi) is a man on a mission to get Liz.

Not knowing who freed Mr. Solomon to go after Liz is the big question here. Red insists it was NOT Katarina Rostova (Liz’s mom). So, if not her, who? If Liz’s death is all fake (which I truly believe it was), going this far to present her as deceased could certainly throw off her potential kidnapper from abducting her. But what about the baby? Who will make sure little Agnes Keen doesn’t get taken by the same crazy person?

3. Raymond Reddington’s Revenge Plan & Tom Keen’s Spin-Off

317-12

Ryan Eggold is bringing Tom Keen to a new Blacklist-centric world. But will baby Agnes go with him?

We all know Reddington won’t sit idilly by after Liz’s “death”. I don’t believe he was in on the plot to fake it. In fact, I think it was partially done to not only get her away from her kidnapper, but Raymond too. Hiding Liz from both of those forces, will pit them against each other. If they take each other out, so be it. Really it is the best solution to protect Liz and Agnes in the long run. However, that doesn’t address the issue of Tom Keen and Mr. Solomon being the two new main conflicting characters on the upcoming spin-off from Jon Bokenkamp. Liz’s death gives his character an ‘out’, but will Tom have Agnes in that new world with him, or will he leave the baby in more capable hands? I doubt it would be Red, but would Tom give her up for adoption to protect her?

Regardless of how you spin Liz’s death – real, not real, who knows – it was a very powerful episode. The Blacklist delivered on its promotional tease in a way that I never thought they would. I think Liz’s death is a great plot point and I’m excited to see how the rest of the season plays out!

Do you think Liz’s death is fake? If so, who put it all in motion? The next episode of The Blacklist airs next Thursday at 9/8C on NBC.

  1. I hope it is fake cant see the show without the star. In fact there is no show without Liz wtf are they thinking? Bring her back!!!

  2. Take what Kaplan told Red, that he couldn’t protect her. Kaplan took matters into her own hands to fake Lizzies death. Kaplan, Nik, Tom, Liz and possibly Dembe are in on this. I don’t believe Red is Involved at all.

They know Red’s situation, (and therefore Lizzie’s situation as well) is becoming much more dire and dangerous, and that he can’t provide the protection they need for her.

He always thinks he can, but now he is in over his head and he can’t see past himself to realize it.

They had no choice but to take this route to provide Lizzie a place to lay low for awhile and get out of harms way.

Red needs to take care of business before she can safely return. This allows him to focus on matters at hand without the great Lizzie/baby distraction.

I think Red is about to go on the warpath and the shizz is going down!!

    • I thought it was Mr. Kaplan managing this entire operation. I never even considered that Dembe would be part of this whole plan to deceive Raymond.
I never imagined Dembe keeping any secret from Raymond. He’s 100% loyal to him. But, if this were for his own good and Elizabeth’s safety…well, I guess he could justify doing something like this. In September I suppose we’ll have our answers…or a few answers, with more questions. Just like always.

    • That is exactly what I Tought. I bet Dembe is included, he supports Mr Kaplan. I am even convinced she hasn’t even had a problem, that she faked that and plotted with her ex, Kaplan and help of Dembe.

I wonder if even Tom is aware.

Remember when Red comes to see her and she pushes him away? Right after that goes Mr Kaplan….

Liz is sure it is her mother after that. If so, feigning death would enrage her and make her show herself.

  3. Definitely fake & Mr Kaplan put this entire thing into motion with the help of the Dr & Tom. Maybe Ressler knows too. Kaplan was pissed at Red & was trying to protect Liz. Great recap!

  4. I think it’s fake in order to get Solomon off her trail. And she will come back next season. Think about it Tom was not broke up that much when Red went to visit him.
And Red did a great job of acting to make it look real..

    • I don’t think Red knew at all. I think this was all Mr. Kaplan and the doc, and probably Tom as well. Red’s reaction has to be genuine or whoever it is that is after her will know her death was fake. At least, that’s how I see it. But, if he WAS acting, not only should Spader get an Emmy, so should Reddington! 😉

  5. It’s absolutely fake – the whole point of the show is the big secret(s) surrounding Liz. This is not a new tactic. Cliffhangers. Sweeps. Getting Spader that Emmy nom. That said…I think it’s Famke Janssen in the car, en route to the spin-off.

  6. I think she is alive and well and in care and custody of Mr. Kaplan.

  7. It’s a fake-out done ‘Walking Dead’ style.

  8. Mr Kaplan is the mastermind and she is doing it to get Lizzie away from Red & Mr Solomon’s benefactor. Heartbreaking for poor Red & I suspect it will be even more devastating when he finds out. Very bitter sweet for him. I’m not sure if Mr Kaplan is taking over because she fundamentally feels Red is bad for her or if she is on the other side and is taking Liz to the enemy (who Liz thinks is her mother). It will be fascinating to find out & I’m looking forward to some great Spader scenes but I’m going to have to get used to smearing my mascara.

  9. It was definitely fake. Mr. Kaplan, Tom and the doctor devised the plan together.

  10. James Spader carries the show. Excellent actor even if Megan Boone is the lead.

  11. Rosane Massoni Malavazzi

I refuse t believe she is dead. Maybe it is because Megan Boone needs a rest to get her owns baby…

  12. I think Liz’s death is a fake orchestrated by Mr Kaplan. Red does not know; I don’t think Tom or Dembe or anyone else in a regular role knows. Tom was very distressed and teary eyed at the end. He doesn’t know. Next couple of episodes will tell. I just hope he doesn’t give up Agnes for adoption – that would be devastating when/if Liz comes back.

  13. I think it’s all a fake because we never saw the doctor call that she was dead. It’s totally a fake to get away from soloman

  14. I’ve been a faithful fan of the blacklist and watched all episodes religiously since day one. I’m a bit angry and sad that one of my favorite supporting actors has to be sacrificed, “killed off”, leaving a new born baby behind, not to mention a wedding that was left at the altar. However, there’re two possibilities as I see it at the end of this episode. Let me start with the good news first and that is Red and the doctor are putting a plan into action. Being Raymond Reddington, he has all the power and connection to do the impossible. His team will revive agent Keen and shield her from Solomon’s threat for a while until she’s healthy again and ready to reveal herself to face the person or organization who brought about this tragedy. The bad news is that this is for real and Elizabeth Keen will no longer be a part of the agency. She will leave behind a newborn in the care of Raymond and Tom. Her last breath is the last we’ll see on the blacklist and her daughter, eventually in the near future, will rise to search for her mother’s death and will take the ultimate revenge but the truth once she finds out will also be heart wrenching as this one. In the meantime, Raymond and Tom will go their separate way in search of who’s behind Solomon and will take on their own revenge. As we all know, these two will not let any stone unturned and revenge will be Shakespeare. They’ll be up against someone or something of greater power than imagine.

  15. Seen it in shows where they use medication to slow the heart to pretty much a stop to fake a persons death but the fact they hit her with the paddles like 3 times would make that hard to believe. I still think it is a fake death though

  16. James Spader is an absolutely amazing actor! That said, I can’t fathom this show without Megan Boone. The dynamic between Liz and Red is deep and superbly acted. Please don’t let this be the end of it. They are too good…this show is a gift.
